First steps (a confession)

Over the last few months I’ve defended my dissertation proposal, wrapped up the spring quarter (grading, Spinoza seminar), written my Deleuze Studies conference paper and presented it in New Orleans, managed to work quite a bit at my day job, read some Agamben and tons of Henry Miller, but I haven’t really made any progress on my research itself. However, this weekend I listened to the recording of my dissertation proposal defense and took some notes (the refrain was “put the theory books down and immerse yourself in the neighborhood”). So last night I went to the Great City/Downtown Seattle Association open house about the SLU upzone. Today I took a walk through the neighborhood with some classmates then attended the city council forum about the upzoning. So, all of a sudden, I find myself with a burgeoning archive of discourses. I’ve even scored a free subscription to the Daily Journal of Commerce. In a way, I feel like I’m poking around in the dark, but at the same time I also feel like I’m seizing this project by the horns…
